Project: A.R.T. Takes Hip Hop to the Tip Top

DETROIT Project: A.R.T. (awareness, respect & truth) made great strides in 2006 as Detroit’s ONLY Hip Hop Arts Organization.  Established ten years ago in 1996, Project: A.R.T.’s mission is to help decrease juvenile delinquency and victimization by focusing students’ attention on the Hip Hop Arts through technology.

In 2004, Project: A.R.T. created a Hip Hop curriculum that focuses on the four original elements of Hip Hop: the Emcee, the DeeJay, the B-Boy/Girl and the Graffiti Artist.  As a way to include non-performing artists, Project: A.R.T. added their own element: the Business Executive.

The efforts of Project: A.R.T. have been recognized in the past year by several Metro Detroit agencies in the following manner:

  •

Youth, Sports and Recreation Commission – Targeted Area Program Capacity Building Grant Phase II - $5000

  • Black United Fund of Michigan Grant - $3000
  • New Detroit, Inc – Compassion Capital Initiative Grant: $10,000
  • Michigan Women’s Foundation Grant- $4500
  • Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs Mini Grant- $4500

Other accomplishment include:

  •

2nd Annual ZigiDeeBooM Hip Hop Fest featuring KRS-ONE at Wayne State University

  • ZigiDeeBooM Safety Workshops with the Gratiot Woods Safe Community Coalition
  • ZigiDeeBooM Hip Hop After School Program with the City of Detroit Recreation Department’s Teen Hot Spots
  • Man Up! Mentoring Workshops at Catherine C. Blackwell Institute
  • ZigiDeeBooM Hip Hop Workshops with The ARK Non-Violence Program
  • Ford Field Non-Profit Vendor Fundraising Program

Project: A.R.T. would like to formally thank all of our supporters and contributors from the past year and congratulate all the students that participated in our programs.

”It took over 10 years for the community at-large to recognize the power of positive Hip Hop programming,“ said Sista Sayre, Program Coordinator for Project: A.R.T. ”Hip Hop has grown into the most powerful musical genre ever and ‘with great power comes great responsibility.’  We, at Project: A.R.T., are not afraid of that responsibility and we challenge the entire Hip Hop industry to be creative in their effort to empower our youth.“
